The CIT Men and UL Ladies have found the going tough at the EUC Futsal 2011 Championships in Tampere, Finland and both now need a win in their play-off game on Wednesday to qualify for the quarter finals
With the group stages now complete the CIT Mens team and the UL Ladies team know they must win in their play-off game to progress further in the competition. The CIT lads have put in strong defensive performances in both their games but have stilled stuggled to match the pace and movement of the teams that have been playing this game for a long time. A gritty and determined performance from CIT in their opening game was not enough as they succumbed 12-0 to a fantastic University of Belgrade side. In their second match they knew they needed to push on and try to get a positive result to avoid a possible play-off spot. This paid dividends as they registered their first goals of the tournament but fatigue meant that they could not match a fresh Swedish team from the University of Orebro and eventually lost 6-2. CIT now play GSU Cologne from Germany on Wednesday at 11:30am (Irish time) in a bid to reach the quarter finals.
In the women's competition the University of Limerick Ladies were drawn in a very tough group with last years runners-up, University of Artois, France, and the Portugese champions, University of Beira Interior. Following an opening day draw between the two it meant the group was wide open and UL went into their first game against Beira knowing that they could get a result from it. Following some heroic defending and some good counter attacking UL found themselves 2-1 up at half time. Beira then came out all guns firing in the second half and UL were made to fight for everything. At the final whistle the game ended 3-3 meaning the group was still there for the taking. Going into the second group game UL knew a win would see them top the group and went about attacking more against the French. However, with a good following from the French Mens teams the University of Artois ladies cut through UL time and again and UL found themselve 4-0 down at half-time. With nothing to lose UL went out and attacked Artois and showed some of the attacking skill that won them the national final. Eventually UL got a breakthrough and made it 4-1 but the joy was shortlived as Artois stepped up their game and added a further 3 to leave a final score of 7-1. UL now also need to win their play-off game on Wednesday against NSSS Oslo from Norway at 12:30pm (Irish time).
Goalscorers so far for CIT were, Sean Foley and Wesley Tong and for UL were Jennifer Critchley (2), Aoife Herbert and Jennifer Downey.
