Chinese Hold Irish in Kazan

08 July 2013

Team Ireland Men's Squad drew 2-2 with China tonight at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

Ireland got off to a flying start when Johhny Addis rounded the China keeper and finished to the net after Darren Forsyth had dispossessed their midfielder.

Ireland dominated the first half and went two up after 34 minutes through Andy Mulligan. Dylan Mernagh played a long pass over the head of the centre half and Mulligan's blind side run was timed to perfection, controlled perfectly and finished to the corner of the net.

However China got one back just before half time, a cross from the right was met on the volley by Han to the top corner just out of Craig Sexton's reach. The second half was a very tight affair with chances few and far between.

China went all out for an equaliser and Sexton made an outstanding save low to his left, however on 89 mins the game was level. Ireland got caught in possession high up the pitch and when the ball fell kindly to Cui he made no mistake from close range.

Manager Danny Crowley said afterwards: "We are disappointed to have conceded so late, the lads put in great shift and we are still on top of group. We need a point against Mexico, and while we are disappointed still in a great position after two group games."

In tonight's other Group A game Russia beat Mexico 2-0. Ireland play Mexico on Wednesday, with a win or draw guaranteeing a place in the quarter-finals.
