UMBRO CUFL Quarter Finals Roundup

27 November 2014

The UMBRO CUFL Quarter Finals took place this week across the country with 15 games played and seven of them going to extra time.

The biggest surprise was the home defeat of Division One winners for the last two seasons IT Carlow 'B' losing 5-3 at home to Letterkenny IT having gone in 2-0 up at the break. The Carlow students have been the best team for the last four years at this level losing the 2012 final and 2011 semi final after extra time, and going 31 games with just one defeat.
In the Premier Division holders UCD had Tom O'Halloran to thank with a last minute goal at the end of extra time for a 1-0 in the University of Limerick after a thrilling game. Last season's beaten finalists IT Carlow went 1-0 through Dean Broaders at home but Lindo Majola equalised for 2012 winners DIT, who went on to win 4-2 on penalties. This was the first home defeat in the CUFL since 2009, a remarkable achievement.
Niall Lanigan got the only goal of the game as Maynooth University avenged last years quarter final defeat by Athlone IT in a tight encounter. Two outstanding free kicks from Kevin O'Connor either side of half time were enough for Waterford IT to shock hosts DCU and reach their first semi final where they will play another first timer, Maynooth University.
In Division One NUI Galway had a comfortable win against a youthful Colaiste Ide while Dundalk IT were pushed all the way at home to Limerick IT with Sean O'Connor getting a late winner in extra time.
IT Blanchardstown 'B' were the biggest winners in Division Two the feature a Ruaidhri Maher hat-trick as they hammered Cork College of Commere. Maynooth University 'B' needed penalties to beat a fancied Inchicore College while DCU 'B' beat LIT Tipperary 2-1 after extra time. In a repeat of last years final IT Carlow 'C' and Athlone IT 'B' went to extra time also but two Darren Rogers goals were the feature of a 5-1 win.
In Division Three there were wins for Carlow Institute of FE, UCC 'C' and Dun Laoghaire IADT in the play offs while a hat trick from Conor Delahunty was the feature as Maynooth University 'C' beat IT Carlow 'D' in the first of the quarter finals.
