CUFL Matchday Two

13 October 2015

Twenty four games down, plenty more to go.

The CUFL enters the second matchday after an exciting goal-frenzied first week. There was an incredible 110 goals scored in 24 games. At an average of 4.58 goals a game, it breaks the opening matchday record from the past 5 years. Who would be a goalkeeper!?

We've got another 35 games to look forward to this week. On Tuesday, Dublin IT welcome Athlone IT to their new Grangegorman facility. Both sides will be searching for their first win of the season with defeat for either will start the alarm bells. The Premier champions UCD will look to continue their great start to the season as they entertain their rivals from North Dublin, Dublin City University on Wednesday. In the other tie of the Premier North, Maynooth University will look to build on their away win last week with a home tie to Trinity College Dublin.

It is sure to be a crunch encounter in Cork as Colaiste Stiofain Naofa host UL. CSN could not have asked for a better start with their 5-0 thumping of local rivals CIT. UL won't be coming to make up the numbers however as they will look to build on their positive 2-2 draw with IT Carlow. The Carlow men themselves will be up against another Matchday One winner in UCC. While it is still early days, if UCC were to take all three points in this encounter it could leave the two-time champions in a precarious position if other results were to go against them.

The Cork IT campus may feel a little empty on Wednesday afternoon as their A, B and C teams all travel to Waterford IT to take on their respective counterparts in what is sure to be an exciting day of football in Waterford. It is a huge credit to WIT who are capable of hosting all three games simultaneously in their campus.

It is a clash of two unbeaten teams in Mervue United on Tuesday as GMIT Galway host IT Sligo in a contest that could point the way to the eventual group toppers. In the third game of Division 1 Group A, Letterkenny IT will be hoping to inflict further punishment on Dundalk IT who are yet to see a win for either team in the CUFL. Letterkenny will have their tails up after their 3-0 win from last week.
In Division One Group B, Mary Immaculate College will be on their guard as IT Carlow 'B' come to town after dismantling Sallynoggin College 7-0 last week. Sallynoggin won't have it easy again this week as they travel to Maynooth, who also scored 7 goals last week in Limerick. Sallynoggin will hope that they can find the same holes in the Maynooth 'B' defence that LIT striker Mark McGrath found last week. McGrath who scored four versus Maynooth will be hoping to bring the same form into his college's encounter with ITT Dublin as they search for their first points on the board.

In Division Two, there are crucial clashes across all four groups. IT Tralee kick off their campaign with a home tie against Limerick IT 'B', who will be hoping for a better result than the point they took from Cork IT 'B' last week. IT Blanchardstown "B" will be hoping to continue their goalscoring form as they host an Inchicore side who will need to defend better than they did last week if they are to avoid back-to-back defeats. Galway Technical Institute will be hoping they can get off to the perfect start at home to Athlone 'B'. The Air Corps will be out to make amends for last week's defeat, when they travel to NCI who are playing their first game of the campaign.

There is plenty of Division Three clashes which are proving difficult to predict. There is a battle of the campuses in GMIT as Galway campus take on Mayo campus. UL 'B' won't find it easy as they await UCC 'B'. NUIG 'B' will be hoping to continue their positive start as they welcome Moate Business College.

We will also get a taste of what is to come in the CUFL's new Division Four. With an emphasis on welcoming new teams to the league, we are looking forward to two new clubs taking each other on when Rathmines College and Blackrock Further Education Institute clash on Tuesday afternoon. There is another new club having their maiden game in the CUFL as Waterford College of Further Education take on IT Tralee. Whatever happens, there is sure to be excitement and drama at whatever match you choose to attend this week in the CUFL.
