Squad Announced for Welsh Test

25 April 2016

Irish Colleges and Universities Head Coach Greg Yelverton will be hoping his side continue on their winning way when they visit Barry Town's Jenner Park to take on the Welsh Universities in an International Friendly fixture on Wednesday April 27 (2.0).

Yelverton's side are fresh from a comprehensive 3-0 defeat of the Scottish Universities earlier this month in Whitehall and he is hoping for more of the same in Wales.

Goals from Jason Lyons, Georgie Poynton and Rob Coughlan gave the Irish the win in Dublin and with all three goal scorers included in the squad for the game against Wales Yelverton can be optimistic of gaining another good result.

The Irish Head Coach in his first term in charge of the newly established Irish side watched the Welsh record an impressive 1-0 victory in Edinburgh prior to the Scottish Universities visit to Dublin with Ellis Bellamy the son of former Wales international Craig getting the second half winner.

"The Welsh side were a well coached and very organised side with some top players that are sure to trouble us and I certainly expect it to be a tough game," explained Yelverton.

"This fixture in Wales gives the players the first opportunity to pull on an Irish jersey and represent their country at this level on away soil and I will be keen to continue our fine start with a good performance. It also means myself and the coaching staff will have a chance to work with the players for a couple of days. The squad will have a light work out on Tuesday at the FAI's excellent facilities in Abbotstown prior to our departure and it's important for the lads to learn to cope with an away game and the travelling, hotels and all that goes with it," added Yelverton.

Welsh Head Coach Steve Savage has named a strong squad for the game with 11 players from his own University of South Wales who recently won the British Universities and Colleges Premier League title for the first time this season included.

"I'm delighted that the Welsh Universities are hosting this first away international fixture for the new Irish Colleges and Universities side. Over the past few years we have played other Irish student teams and I know what to expect. The lads are in good form after our impressive win over the Scots and we'll be well prepared," said Savage.
