CROWLEY CUP DAY TWO REPORT

11 March 2017

For the second successive year the Irish Universities Crowley Cup final will feature two sides from Northern Ireland with Ulster University-Coleraine bidding for a three in a row sequence of victories when they face Queens University Belfast in the decider on Sunday at UL Cappavilla 3G pitch (2.0).

A strong second half performance by the holders saw them outplay University of Limerick 'B' side and hit three goals without reply to keep them on track for another cup win.

Ryan Varma was on target twice with the second goal coming from the penalty spot in the closing minutes after Ryan Burke had put Coleraine on their way ten minutes after the restart.

Queens University who lost out to their Ulster University rivals in last season's semi final had little difficulty overcoming the challenge of DCU and went on to claim a comfortable 3-0 victory.

The Dublin side had a great chance to take an early lead but Philip Sheehan sliced his effort wide from in front of goal.

Mark Coulter then fired Queens ahead after 25 minutes with a neat finish from close in.

David Kennedy doubled the total five minutes later at the second attempt after DCU 'keeper Dominic Hull had blocked his initial effort.

Jack Homan went on to wrap up the game with 20 minutes remaining when he netted the third Queens goal.

Maynooth University will face UCC in the Crowley Plate Final on Sunday (11.0) at UL Cappavilla 3G pitch.

The Co Kildare side came back from going 5-2 behind against University of Limerick 'A' side to win their semi final 6-5.

Killian McManus put them back in the tie with two goals before they levelled through Eric Murphy and McManus then went on to hit the winner with just minutes remaining for a dramatic comeback victory.

A brace apiece from Sean Ryan and Gordon McKevitt plus an own goal had given UL that 5-2 lead with a Ben Gibson penalty and a Cian Li goal the Maynooth reply.

UCC had little trouble overcoming last season's defeated finalists St Mary's College Belfast 8-3 to book their place in the Plate decider.

Two goals from Arnauld Tehousane and Brian Nolan with two penalty kicks top scored for the Cork boys.
