Harding Cup SFs - UCC and Trinity set to clash

23 February 2018

Trinity College and UCC will meet tomorrow afternoon in Tolka Park to contest the 2018 RUSTLERS IUFU Harding Cup Final after both sides were victorious in their semi-finals in the AUL Complex, Clonshaugh today.

UCC will be looking to record their eight success in the competition. They played out a goalless stalemate with the 2016 winners UCD over 110 minutes and required a penalty shootout to decide matters with James Sheehan netting the crucial kick in the 4-2 win.

It has been 21 years since Trinity last lifted the trophy and will be hoping to make tomorrow their fourth success after a surprising 3-0 success over Maynooth University. Mark Wadid's brace of efforts in either half added to Peter Healy's opening goal left the Kildare side stunned and with no answer.

In the Spillane Cup, it will be a Connacht derby as the 2016 winners NUI Galway take on the current holders Mary Immaculate College. Whilst the competition was contested by each side's senior teams in those years, it will be a welcome opportunity for both fresher teams to win their first trophy in Third Level. Galway required extra time to end the tournament for hosts DCU whereas Mary I earned the bragging rights in their all-Limerick clash with UL. There will be a particular League of Ireland element about the game from the touchline as former Limerick FC and Wexford FC manager Noel O'Connor oversees the Limerick teaching institute with Galway United legend Kevin Cassidy in the opposite dugout as assistant coach.
