Queen's University finally got their hands back on the RUSTLERS Crowley Cup with an extra-time victory over Maynooth University in the Mardyke.
Joe McCann got on the end of a free-kick to deliver the trophy to the Belfast side at the third time of asking in recent years after disappointment to Ulster University Coleraine in the previous two finals.
Both sides had opportunities to seize the game in normal time. The best chance of the first half fell to Queen's Colm Davis. The Maynooth defence was opened up by a great team move with the ball falling to Davis who looked destined to score but for the agility of Maynooth stopper Patrick O'Siuchru who managed to claw away Davis' effort.
Maynooth had the better of the opportunities in the second half. Joe McKinnie burst down the wing and delivered a cross for Joe Judge in the box but his header from 8 yards fell kindly to Evin Matthewson in the Queen's net.
Time eventually ran out for both sides and extra time was required. Just before the interval in the additional period, the deadlock as finally broken by McCann.
Queen's could have further cemented their lead in the final period with Craig Briers smashing the cross bar from the edge of the box but Maynooth could not muster up a response and the celebrations began for Queen's.
