Surgeons win dramatic penalty shoot-out in Collingwood Cup first round

24 February 2009

The most dramatic match of the four first round matches in the Collingwood Cup in Cork today saw Royal College of Surgeons goalkeeper, Jamie Clerkin, save three penalties as his team defeated Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, in a penalty shoot-out after extra time. UCD were the day’s big winners – hitting Ulster University Magee for eight

University of Limerick   1 – 0   Queen’s University Belfast
Goalkeeper Peter Mallett was a hero for Queen’s University Belfast as they subjected University of Limerick to a searching examination at the UCC sportsgrounds, the Farm.

Limerick needed a goal from a penalty to win a tight contest with Paul Walsh converting the spot-kick in the 40th minute. Limerick might have made things easier had Martin Deadye not failed to score from the penalty spot within thirty seconds of the start.

UCD   8 – 0   UU Magee
UCD were always in control of their game with Magee University after leading 3-0 at half-time and with Eoin Roche producing a ‘Man of the Match’ performance in midfield.

John Dineen, Michael Kelly and Peter McMahon scored those first half goals and after the break further goals came from Martin Daly (2), David McMillan (2) and Gary O’Toole.

Mary Immaculate College, Limerick   1 – 1   Royal College of Surgeons
(Surgeons won 4-3 on penalties after extra time)

Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, made a brave attempt to mark their introduction to Collingwood Cup competition with a win but lost out in a dramatic shoot-out.

Goalkeeper Jamie Clerkin was a goalkeeping star for the Surgeons. He saved a penalty in the course of the match and then played a major part in deciding the shoot-out by rejecting two penalty attempts from Limerick.

Sean Scannell gave Limerick the lead early in the second half but Surgeons hit back through Declan Norris to force extra time.

UU Jordanstown   2 – 0   NUI Maynooth
Jordanstown scored twice in the second half to see off the challenge of Maynooth.

Mark Surgenor headed in their first in the 55th minute and Paul Heatley turned up at the far post to put the game out of Maynooth’s reach with 15 minutes left to play.

UU Coleraine   6 – 1   Dublin City University
Ally Gordan was top scorer on opening day of the competition when he scored a hat-trick of goals to help Coleraine overcome DCU.

Coleraine led 2-1 at half-time and their other goals came from Paddy Trolan, Nikki Hargan and goalkeeper Ryan McGeough who marched down the pitch to convert a penalty. Jamie Sullivan had DCU’s goal in reply.

*The quarter-final matches will be played tomorrow (Wednesday)
