Collingwood Cup - Day Three Round Up

03 March 2010

UCD and NUI Galway have both made it through to-days Irish Universities Collingwood Cup Final at The Brandywell (2.0) to set up a repeat of last seasons decider which the Belfield side won with a Robbie Creevy goal at The Mardyke.

Peter McMahon proved to be the UCD match winner in a narrow one goal semi final win over Jordanstown. Mark Langtry supplied a superb ball in from the left that McMahon struck firmly past a helpless Matt Quinn with 15 minutes of a tight encounter remaining.

UCD dominated most of the opening half but Dave McMillen and Paul Corry both failed to test Quinn from good scoring positions.James Doherty then missed a glorious opportunity to put Jordanstown ahead from the penalty spot but Mark McGinley managed to keep out his effort with a superb save.

Last seasons hero Creevy was introduced into midfield after the break to good effect and UCD continued to press but again wayward shooting was letting them down until McMahon struck to fire them into the final. Late on Jordanstown had one final chance to take the tie to extra time but again McGinley was in top form to tip a Stephen Doyle close range free over his bar. Photos from the game click here

Galway had little trouble accounting for hosts Magee College in the other semi final coming out well on top 4-1 in a one sided game.Local Derry City lad Dave Shovlin had Galway in front with two fine first half strikes. The second half was much the same and Micky Creane wrapped up a disappointing tie with two further Galway goals bringing their total to 12 scored so far in three games played. Another Derry player Adam Clarke netted Magee’s late consolation .

Galway will be boosted for the final by the return from international duty of their Republic of Ireland Under 21 defender Seamus Conneely.

Mary Immaculate College Limerick captured the Duggan Cup in a 4-1 win over Coleraine.Goals from Rob O’Halloran, Conor Lane, Thomas O’Shea and John Byrne had Noel O’Connor’s side well in control. Simon Crawley replied for the Northern side. Photos from the game click here
