University of Limerick AFC & Sports Dept Launches 2012 Collingwood Cup

18 February 2012

Universityof Limerick AFCis delighted to announce details of the 2012 Intervarsity Football Championships, the Collingwood, sponsored by Ulster Bank. The championships take place from Monday February 20 to Thursday February 23 at the UL playing fields, (the Bowl and the 10 Acres).

The first Collingwood was held in 1914 and is by some distance Ireland’s oldest all-island senior Soccer Competition. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Limerick first hosting the event. The University Sports Office and Soccer club are committed, thanks to the generous support of Ulster Bank, to pulling out all the stops so that this renewal of the famous old tournament is a particularly memorable one. This year, for the first time ever, Collingwood matches will be played in County Clare as UL’s state of the art new synthetic pitches and brand new Pavilion in Cappavilla are scheduled to host matches over the course of the week.

The games commence on Monday at 11AM when two of Ireland’s most venerable institutions Trinity College and the Royal College of Surgeons go head to head on the Bowl. Also on Monday, at 2PM, NUI Maynooth (NUIM) take on Queens University Belfast (QUB) while Dublin City University (DCU) is pitted against the might of University College Dublin (UCD) on the 10 Acres pitches.

Tuesday (Feb. 21) is Collingwood quarter-finals day. The luck of the draw has seen to it there will be a Limerick Representative in the Collingwood semi-final this year as hosts UL will entertain near neighbours Mary Immaculate in the first quarter-final which kicks off at 11AM on the 10acres. Tuesday also sees a repeat of last year’s final as NUI Galway seeks to reach a third final in a row at the expense of reigning champions UCC. This is sure to be a titanic tussle and spectators will be assured of a wonderful spectacle on the UL 10 Acres pitches at 2PM when this game and also the two other quarter-finals featuring the University of Ulster and the previous day’s winners take place at this time.

The Collingwood Semi-finals are scheduled for 2PM on Wednesday February 22nd and the 2012 Collingwood cup final will Kick Off at 2PM, Thursday February 23rd, on the University Bowl.
