Collingwood Cup Day Two

21 February 2012

Hosts University of Limerick beaten by local rivals Mary I, UCD overcome Maynooth after extra time and Holders UCC beat NUIG 4-0. Another big shock as RCSI beat Jordanstown on penalties.

UL 1 Mary Immaculate 2

Scorers: UL: Declan O'Donnell. MIC: John Hutton and Cormac Crowe

The shocks keep coming in this tournament! UL went one up midway through the first half but paid the ultimate price for passing up plenty of opportunities to make the game safe. To be fair to Mary I they came into it more in the latter stages and looked the fitter/hungrier side at the finish.

Scorers: Paul Lawless 2, Rob Waters, Kyle O'Shea.

Another shock of sorts - this time the ease with which UCC eased their way into a semi-final took everyone by surprise and bodes very well for their chances of retaining their trophy. UCC were two up at the break and were excellent all over the pitch today.

UUJ 0 RCSI 0(aet RCSI win 4-3 on penalties)

The form book has taken some battering this week so it's hard to describe this as a shock. RCSI's success has been built on a rock solid defence and an excellent goalkeeper James Clerkin. They have yet to concede a goal! RCSI were always in front in the shootout thanks to a string of fine saves.

UCD 3 NUI Maynooth 1 (after extra time)

UCD came from behind, for the second game in a row, to book their place in the semi final of the Collingwood Cup. NUI Maynooth provided the opposition in a blustery UL Bowl and nearly held on for a famous victory. UCD's spirit and talent won out in the end as the Belfield Students fought back to equalise before the end of 90 minutes and then went on to dominate the extra time period, running out 3-1 winners. Craig Mooney had put Maynooth into the lead.

Mark Langtry was at it again as he popped up late in the game to equalise and once into extra time UCD ran riot and scored two more goals. Ross King and Stiofain Sexton put their names on the score sheet to ensure UCD go into the last 4.
