IUFU Collingwood Cup Round Up Day Three

Holders UCC were amazingly beaten today by Noel OíConnorís underdogs Mary I in a thrilling Irish Universities Collingwood Cup today at University of Limerick.

Peter Lane had given Mary I an early lead to shock the holders, and had goalkeeper Bobby Carroll, Ian Hughes and John Hutton to thank for some outstanding defending throughout the game. It looked like Mary I were about to win the game but Steve Mahon scored a late equaliser with a great strike from outside the box to bring the game to extra time and eventually penalties. Carroll was the hero and Mary went through 4-2 to their first ever Collingwood Cup.

UCD were three nil up after 25 minutes with goals from Niall Hanley, Michael Arnold and Ross King. Brian McDonald added a fourth just before half time to put the Belfield side well in control. Canadian born striker completed his hat-trick with two further goals early in the second half as a tired Surgeons bowed out after their historic run to their first ever semi finals.

DCU claimed the Spillane Cup with extra time win in a thrilling Dublin derby with Dublin University. Defender Paddy Collins, playing up front for DCU, notched two headed goals from corners after James Lee had opened the scoring with a goal direct from a corner. Fahad Patel hit both of the Trinity sides goals.

Host UL and NUI Maynooth will meet in the Final of the Bishop Farquhar Cup after Niall Lanigans hat-trick, with two from Jamie Airey and one from Dean McMahon helped Maynooth to a comprehensive 6-2 win over UUJ. James Peden and Mark Anderson were on target for the northerners. UL with two goals from Nigel Stanley and one a piece from Rob Doyle, Marty Owens and Colm Carroll proved too strong for NUI Galway.
