Queens University Belfast capture IUFU Crowley Cup

25 March 2012

A late Owen Farnan goal helped Queens University to a first Irish Universities Crowley Cup win since 1993 in a tense final against hosts UCD at Belfield.

Queens took a surprise early lead with a goal scored direct from a corner kick.Fergal  McCloskey’s well flighted inswinger aided by a slight breeze completely deceived UCD ‘keeper Eric Barber and ended up in the back of his net.

Alan Sutton had UCD level shortly after  beating Queens ‘keeper  Sean McNeill with a firm header from Darragh Culleton’s left wing cross

Queens began to get on top after the break and Farnan on the right wing was prominent forcing Barber to punch clear on a couple of occasions.

The winner came seven minutes from time after Farnan was allowed to get between three UCD defenders and steer the ball past a hesitant Barber.

Queens left back Michael Kerr then came to his side’s rescues in the closing minutes with two headed clearance off the goal line after Cormac Suan and Robbie Murray had both beaten McNeill with goal bound  efforts.
