CUFL Regional Futsal 2012

The CUFL Regional Futsal Finals took place this week with the events being held at six locations across the country. IT Sligo, IT Blanchardstown, NUI Maynooth, IT Carlow, University of Limerick and University College Cork all held host to the competition.

IT Sligo

Athlone IT came out on top in the CUFL Futsal Regional’s held in IT Sligo. It was a close run competition with AIT, IT Sligo and LYIT all vying for top position going into the last game. Although Athlone drew their first game 4-4 with IT Sligo, they went through there other games unfazed.  GMIT Galway pulled off a shock win at the end beating IT Sligo 4-2. So this meant going into the final game LYIT had everything to play for and put it up to AIT, but AIT did not slip up and go through on top of the group.

IT Blanchardstown

It was a short affair in IT Blanchardstown as the event saw two late withdrawals which made it a three team group. IT Tallaght proved too strong for the Griffith College and IT Blanchardstown. The home team narrowly missed out on a draw against a strong Tallaght side. William Ngesi was the day’s top scorer with (7) goals in total. There were some outstanding players of the day as the following all made a significant impact on the pitch:

ITB – Alan Cosgrove & Storm Sammons

ITT- Keith O Reilly & Jonathan Kelty

Griffith College – Luke Hogan & Timm Herrmann

IT Carlow

IT Carlow Black team took the top spot in this competition as they fought off stiff competition from WIT and IT Carlow Red, and White teams.IT Carlow’s Carl Grehan and Sean Skelly were joint top scorers with 7 on the day as. IT Carlow Black team just edged past IT Carlow Red team as they won their final game 3-2.

NUI Maynooth

Home advantage proved the difference as NUI Maynooth narrowly beat NCI in a thrilling final game at North Campus Maynooth. The two teams finished first and second in their group having had good performances against UCD and DIT.  The final game ended 4-4 after normal time and then 5-5 after extra time. A hat trick from Ahmed Elmeer wasn’t enough to see NCI beat the hosts. So it was down to penalties to decide the winner as the home side won 4-2. The scorers for Maynooth were: Kevin Farragher, Niall Conran, Sean Hoare (2), and Adam Knop. The goal scorers for NCI were: Ahmed Elmeer 3, Alan Talbot 2.

University College Cork

CIT A were crowned champions of their group in UCC today. They fought off heavy competition from UCC A and B teams. CIT A played their B team in the final game as came out 4-2 winners.

University of Limerick

A sensational performance from LIT and in particular their top goal scorer Colin Scanlan (9) ensured that they were the champions of their group in the Limerick Region.  LIT drew 2-2 in their first game against close rivals UL. From then on, both teams won their remaining games as it went down to goal difference to decide the winner of the group. LIT were aided by Scanlan’s nine goals on the day. However it wasn’t just the goal scorer that praise was due, as Aaron Burke, LIT goalkeeper was awarded player of the tournament. It was his superb form that kept his team neck and neck with UL.
