IUFU Crowley Cup Friday Round Up

22 March 2013

Holders Queens University Belfast got off to the perfect start with a convincing 5-0 victory over University of Limerick in the opening round of games of the Irish Universities Crowley Cup at NUI Maynooth.

A biting winds and a fair amount of rain and sleet failed to dampen the spirits of all eight sides who took part in the quarter finals ties played on Maynooth's remarkably fine grass pitches. Jason McDermott hit two of the Queens goals while Seamus Moore, Ed Parker and Iman Ghaffari completed their total.
Hosts NUI Maynooth put in a strong second half performance to overcome DCU after the sides went in at the interval level at 1-1. Ryan Johnstone had given Maynooth an early lead but DCU responded with a fine strike from Diarmuid Conathy to draw level by the break. However aided by the conditions Maynooth stormed ahead in the second half with goals from Alan Gartland, Jamie Coyle and Walle Mashaun to run out comfortable winners and set up a semi-final clash with Queens's to-day (2.30).
A second half hat trick from Aran Islander Cillian O'Conghaile was the boost UCC needed to take their quarter final tie with St Mary's College Belfast after a scorless opening half. Stephen O'Mahony and Alister Murphy were on the ball to add further goals as the Cork boys proved the stronger side.
UCC will now face the University of Ulster Coleraine in to-days other semi Final (2.30) after the Ulstermen got the better of Trinity College Dublin in a tight game. Diarmuid Sherry had put Coleraine in front midway into the opening half but a clever Shane Sheedy effort pulled Trinity level by the break. It was only in the last quarter that Coleraine managed to get on top after Trinity had been reduced to ten men following Killian Lee's dismissal for a second yellow card. The experienced Coleraine side edged in front through Craig Doak after a goalmouth scramble and near the finish a well delivered Ross Handford free kick sealed the hard fought win.

Quarter Finals: Queens University Belfast 5 (Jason McDermott 2, Seamus Moore, Edward Parker, Iman Ghaffari) University of Limerick 0; NUI Maynooth 4 (Ryan Johnstone, Alan Gartland, Jamie Coyle, Walle Mashaun) DCU 1 (Diarmuid Conathy); St Mary's College Belfast 0 UCC 5 (Cillian O'Conghaile 3-1 pen, Stephen O'Mahony, Alister Murphy); Trinity College Dublin 1 (Shane Sheedy) University of Ulster Coleraine 3 (Diarmuid Sherry, Craig Doak, Ross Handford).
