University of Ulster Coleraine Claim IUFU Crowley Cup

24 March 2013

Coleraine won their first Crowley Cup in 30 years while University of Limerick won the Plate.

A firmly placed header from defender Diarmuid Sherry three minutes into added time edged out holders Queens University Belfast and gave the University of Ulster Coleraine their first Irish Universities Crowley Cup success in 30 years in a hard fought all northern clash at NUI Maynooth.
Sherry got his head to a well delivered Steafan McKenna corner to beat goalkeeper Sean McNeill for the decisive score with the sides level at 1-1 and extra time looming.
French student Gael Reverte had put Coleraine in front just before the break and they should have added to the score in the opening period of the second half but McNeill in the Queens goal was at his best making a couple of wonderful saves from Ryan Gibbin and Matthew Hynds.
While McKenna had McNeill beaten with his long range effort but the ball struck the base of the post and the danger and rebounded to safety. Queens had few chances to equalise but they did manage to get back on terms with 20 minutes remaining when Luke McCann headed home a Simon Frazer corner.
Anthony Abladey then saw his fierce volley just go past McGeough's far post as the rejuvenated Belfast side pressed for a winner. But it wasn't to be for the holders as the dramatic late winner from Sherry gave Coleraine their long awaited victory.

IUFU Crowley Plate Success For University of Limerick
University of Limerick celebrated in style after they held on to beat St Marys College Belfast 2-1 in the Irish Universities Crowley Plate at NUI Maynooth.
All the goals came in the opening half with Byron O'Neill putting UL into an early lead but this was cancelled out on the half hour by an equaliser from St Mary's skipper John Meighan.
Then a fine individual effort from Neil O'Callaghan minutes later restored the UL advantage and they managed to hold on in a tight second half to take the honours. The Belfast side had a great chance to level towards the finish but UL 'keeper saved brilliantly from Meighan's penalty kick.
