Irish Universities Collingwood Cup Day Two Round Up

26 February 2014

NUI Maynooth caused a major shock with a deserved 2-1 defeat of holders and hosts UCD in an enthralling quarter final tie at the Irish Universities Collingwood Cup in Belfield.

The home side never hit top form as the well drilled Maynooth outfit coached by the St Patrick's Athletic duo of Ger O'Brien and Brendan Clarke and with Inchicore boss Liam Buckley looking on managed to get the better of them for the second time this season.
Although UCD captured the Colleges and Universities Premier League title last week, they had suffered their only league set back going down 3-1 to Maynooth last November also at Belfield. The impressive style that took UCD to that title was badly missing as Maynooth rocked them with a John McKeown opening goal direct from a corner on 25 minutes.
UCD ' keeper Mark McGinley and Robbie Murray on the post both failed to cut out the former Belfield student McKeown's dangerous looking in swinging ball as it looped its way past them into the net.
Dean Clarke and Robbie Benson did threatened to claim an equaliser but outstanding defending from Maynooth's Sean Hoare, Eoin Hyland, Daniel Campbell and Stephen Dunne kept the at bay. NUIM goalkeeper Nathan Murphy did really well to push away Timmy Molloy's shot from distance just before the break.Clarke was then unlucky to see his fiercely struck effort come off the crossbar in a hectic opening to the second half that eventually yielded the equaliser on the hour. Cillian Morrison fired in a corner and Conor Butler got a head to and as the ball bobbled around the goalmouth Clarke managed to poke it over the line.
A third set piece gave Maynooth the winner with 15 minutes remaining when the magnificent Hoare got above the UCD defenders to head home Niall Lanigan's corner. UCD then had further chances with Molloy shooting over and in the closing minutes even McGinley went close with a header but it was Maynooth's day and boy did they celebrate.
The Co Kildare side will now face UCC in to-day's semi-final (2.30) after John Caulfield's boys saw off the challenge of Trinity College in a clear cut 3-0 win. Winger Simon Holland hit the target twice on either side of the break and Greg Henry with a long range effort sealed the win in the final quarter.
DCU and NUI Galway will contest the other semi-final with the Dublin side just managing to get past the determined University of Ulster Jordanstown while NUI Galway had to endure a penalty shootout before coming out on top against the University of Limerick. Shane Madigan fired DCU in front midway into the opening half after good work from Darren Craven. But Declan Roche's side although stepping up their performance on the previous day still failed to stretch the lead with Tom Lahiffe going close with a header. Jordanstown had a good spell in the final quarter and James McCabe struck home the equaliser with eight minutes remaining following up after DCU goalkeeper Ben Dale had got a hand to Mark Anderson's initial effort. But Craven was on hand a couple of minutes later to hammer home the winner from about 25 yards when he picked up a poor defensive clearance.
NUI Galway kept their nerve to win the penalty shootout 4-2 after the quarter final tie with UL ended in stale mate following extra time.
