IUFU Crowley Cup Friday Round Up

28 March 2014

Holders University of Ulster Coleraine made home advantage count as they claimed top spot in their group to progress to the semi-finals stages of the Irish Universities Crowley Cup.

A scoreless draw in the opening encounter with keen rivals Queens University Belfast was followed up by a hard fought 2-0 victory over UCC. Player manager Matthew Hynes gave Coleraine a half time lead from a well struck 20 yard free kick and although UCC pressed them strongly after the break the holders defended in depth and Vincent Mouton sealed the win with a second goal near the finish.
UCC also qualified for the semi-finals by virtue of their 1-0 win over Queens in their other game where John Ryan was on target for the lone score.
NUI Maynooth and DCU are the two sides who made the last four from the other group. The Co Kildare boys were in impressive form in first defeating UL 3-1 with goals from Azad Muhamed, Eoin Kinsella and Craig Peppard while Darragh O'Ceallaigh netted for UL. Maynooth then went on to defeat DCU 2-0 in their second game, Richard Schoenaman and Azad Muhamed getting the goals.
DCU's earlier 3-0 win over UL was enough to give them a semi-final place too. John Reid struck two from the penalty spot and Gavin Kenny was the other DCU scorer.
