Irish Universities beaten by the Irish Defence Forces

02 April 2014

The Irish Universities were hit for six as the Defences Forces regained the Irish Pensions Trust Trophy after a brief one year absence with a convincing victory in the annual game at Peamount Utd FC.

After last years' fine win by the Universities in the corresponding game at Cork the result this time was a huge disappointment.
The more experienced Forces outfit showed determination from the start and went ahead on 14 minutes.
Defender Mark Horgan, a regular with high flying Avondale Utd, glanced a header from Ian Cleary's well placed corner past goalkeeper Nathan Murphy despite the best efforts of Seamus Doherty to clear it off the line.
The Universities were under pressure for most of the half but managed not to concede any further goals before the break although Jamie Murphy, Philly Gorman and Cleary all went close.
Defensive errors then cost the students dearly in the second half as the Forces began to find the target on a regular basis.
Gorman hammered home the second goal on 56 minutes with a great strike from the left hand side of the box.
The lead was further stretched ten minutes later when substitute Sean Poutch beat Murphy with a long range effort.
Shortly after winger Murphy made it 4-0 after cutting in from the left and shooting low past the helpless Murphy in the Universities goal.
Jamie Airey did well to beat Forces 'keeper Ronan O'Reilly on 78 minutes after running on to Samir Belhout's through ball to put some respectability on the scoreline.
But the Forces rounded off their comfortable win with further goals from Mickey O'Shea and Poutch in the closing minutes.
