UCC Capture Harding Cup

08 February 2015

A Pierce O'Riordan goal after only seven minutes proved enough for UCC to bridge a 20 year gap and take the Irish Universities Harding Cup with a narrow victory over University of Limerick at the Mardyke.

The last UCC success in the competition, which is confined to first year university students, was in 1995 when they defeated NUI Galway in the final at Belfast.
O'Riordan's early goal came after Ruben O'Callaghan saw his corner on the right cleared out and when he return ball to the far post David Walsh headed it back across the goalmouth for O'Riordan to beat the helpless Peter Healy from six yards.
The goal helped O'Riordan to keep up his achievement of scoring in all of UCC's three games over the weekend.
The Cork striker then had a gilt edged chance to double the UCC advantage ten minutes later but his delicate lob over the advancing Healy cleared the crossbar.Later Sean Pender and Darragh Kiely both went close
UCC were made to work hard throught the 90 minutes by a well organised UL side but the Limerick boys found it difficult to get back on terms with the excellent Bornemann in top form.
While defenders Cian Murphy,David O'Connor and skipper Sean O'Mahony later named Player of the Tournament also proved difficult opponents.
Colm Murphy did get in to test Bornemann with a free kick from distance and Jamsey McConigle had a couple of chances that never really troubled the UCC 'keeper.
