IUFU Collingwood Cup 2015 Day Three Round Up

25 February 2015

Skipper Darren O'Donoghue shocked recently crowned Colleges and Universities Premier League champions UCD and fired Trinity College into their first Collingwood Cup final since 2002 with a beautiful placed second half free kick in the semi final at a wet and windy Drom.

O'Donoghue , a former UCD under 19 midfielder, beat the helpless UCD 'keeper Niall Corbet from all of 30 yards with his well struck effort that had the wind advantage and sailed high into the top right hand corner of the UCD goal.
The one goal was enough to give outsiders Trinity the chance to take on UCC, 1-0 winners over NUI Galway, in to-day's decider a meeting that will evoke memories of the last time the Dubliners reached a Collingwood Cup final - 13 years ago - and again at Galway when ironically UCC prevailed 10-9 on penalties after the sides had failed to register a score in play.
Trinity were well worth their surprise win as manager Adrian Fitzpatrick had them well set up to contain the treat UCD posed all over the pitch and they carried out his instructions to a tee.
The game played in difficult conditions saw few chances been created by either side although UCD had the bulk of the possession throughout.
After O'Donoghue's goal Trinity continued to soak up the UCD pressure and Greg Sloggett, Niall Hanley and Samir Belhout all had late chances to rescue something for the Belfield side but they found Trinity 'keeper David Minihane in top form.

UCC midfielder Jason Abbott curled in a free kick to the far corner of James Keane's goal from out on the right with five minutes remaining to give UCC a narrow 1-0 win over hosts NUI Galway in the second semi final.
In a very tight game Galway had their best chance earlier when Conor Barry saw his header taken off the goal line by Sean O'Mahony and goalkeeper Charlie Bornemann then did well to block Sean Gavin's return effort with his foot.
