A Gary O'Neill penalty seven minutes from the finish proved to be enough to see UCD past Maynooth University in a tense semi final tie at The Farm. While UL came from a goal down to edge out a ten man Trinity College after extra time to reach the final for the first time since they lost out to the University of Ulster Jordanstown in the 2008 decider at Terryland Park, Galway. The Belfield side are the Collingwood Cup specialists with 42 outright wins plus sharing it twice in the 101 years since it was first played and they will now meet University of Limerick, a university that has yet to win the cup in the final tie.

The meeting of UCD and Maynooth saw Aaron Callaghan the current Co Kildare university manager come up against the club where he had a spell as manager. Neither side could created any worthwhile scoring opportunities in a tight first half with UCD skipper O'Neill having a couple of half chances that never tested Michael Kelly in the Maynooth goal. While a deep free kick from full back Stephen Dunne into the UCD goalmouth looked dangerous but centre back Maxi Kouogun managed to get in a clearance and later Dylan Kavanagh's low drive was easily dealt with by UCD 'keeper Niall Corbet. The second half saw little change with both sides keeping the game tight. UCD's Timmy Molloy got through but fired his effort over the bar while at the other end Jake Corrigan saw his header from a Kavanagh cross taken off the line by Kouogun.

The deadlock was finally broken on 83 minutes when Maynooth substitute Karl Keogh handled a Molloy shot just minutes after coming into the game and skipper O'Neill coolly beat Kelly from the resultant penalty kick for the decisive score.
