from the cufl to the brink of the champions league

04 August 2016

After Dundalk FCs heroics in their UEFA Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round 2nd leg against BATE Borisov, writing themselves into the history books of Irish football, we opened up the history books of Irish Third Level Football and came across some of the names that were part of the now famous squad.

Both Dundalk goalscorers, David McMillan and Robbie Benson, can both boast CUFL Premier Division and IUFU Collingwood Cup appearances and successes during their times as students in UCD. Their captain Stephen O'Donnell added a CUFL Division One title to his CV as manager of the successful Dundalk IT team in the 2015/16 season. Playing on that DKIT team was youngster Anton Reilly who is in the Champions League squad. An unused substitute on the night, Georgie Poynton appeared 3 times this year for the Irish Colleges and Universities National Team.
