six in a row for it carlow

09 March 2017

A John Morgan first half goal gave IT Carlow a narrow victory over Letterkenny IT to continue their remarkable domination of the Colleges FAI Umbro Cup in the final at the Market Fields Limerick.

This latest success extends their remarkable run in the competition to six on the bounce and seven in the past eight season's with only the DIT victory in 2011 managing to break that sequence.

Morgan hit home the vital score close to the half hour mark when his first time effort from a narrow angle to the left of the Letterkenny area beat goalkeeper Shane McElhinney to put Carlow well on the way to their sixth successive success.

Letterkenny had a great chance to go into an early lead after the impressive Adrian Delap worked his way into a good position inside the Carlow area but goalkeeper Seamus Houghton was smartly off his line to block the winger's effort.

Carlow then threatened to go ahead themselves and Dean Broaders and Morgan went close with close range shots and centre back Stephen Moloney did put the ball in the net but that was ruled out for off side.

The pressure paid off on the half hour mark when IT Carlow went in front with Morgan's fine finish.

Early second half pressure from Letterkenny saw Paul McVeigh fire over Houghton's crossbar from 30 yards.

Later the Carlow keeper did well under pressure to punch away a dangerous Lee McColgan free kick and go on to hold a couple of other high balls into the area.

Carlow came close to doubling the score with just over 15 minutes remaining but Ethan O'Neill put his effort over the bar from inside the Letterkenny area after a clever Ryan Murray cut back had set up the chance.

Dean Broaders then had a shot deflected for corner as Carlow began take control in the final period and despite the introduction by Letterkenny of Finn Harps youngster B J Banda the Donegal side couldnąt find a way to force an equaliser.
