futsal finalists decided

09 December 2017

There will be a different winner of the CUFL Futsal Cup for the first time in 3 years as the reigning champions Waterford IT were put to the sword by South-East rivals IT Carlow in the WIT Arena in a regional qualifier this week.

IT Carlow will be joined by Dublin IT, National College of Ireland and UCC in the National Finals on Wednesday January 24th in the Waterford venue.

After topping the group, Carlow had to be at their best to break down a resilient Athlone IT side in their semi-final before coming up against WIT in the final which lived up to its billing. In the end, Carlow prevailed in a 10-goal thriller to book a return to the same venue in the New Year.

They will be joined by DIT who caused a shock themselves when they eliminated last year's runners-up IT Blanchardstown. Gavin Fleming's sides' biggest challenge came from surprise package Dublin Business School who reached the regional final but were undone by Jamie Broderick's goal that sends DIT to Waterford.

UCC will be hoping to begin 2018 as 2017 ends for football for the Rebel County by bringing another trophy back to the Mardyke. They cruised through their group stage games before almost stumbling against local rivals Cork IT as they needed a penalty shootout to secure their place in the National Finals.

The final team to join them will be the last team to lift the trophy before Waterford IT's three-in-a-row run in the competition. The National College of Ireland were winners of the competition back in 2014 and will be hoping to reclaim their title after making light work of their regional in Dundalk against DKIT and DCU.

In the Women's Cup competition, IT Carlow will be hoping to make it three-in-a-row themselves as they qualified from their regional in Carlow against the challenges of DCU and Trinity College.

They will be joined by last year's finalists' IT Sligo and Maynooth University. Maynooth went close to claiming the title themselves last year but were undone by Carlow in the final.

Maynooth defeated UCD 3-2 in their regional final as Rachel Doyle, Emma Byrne and Naima Chemaou all got on the scoresheet.

Sligo would get the better of GMIT Galway with a 2-0 win in the final.

Waterford IT will make up the quarter thanks in part to a Ciara Rossiter brace in their regional final against Limerick IT as they won 3-1.
