Villa Football Club are delighted to announce the award of the first Frank O’Byrne Soccer Scholarship in conjunction with Waterford Institute of Technology. The first recipient of the award is Danny Walsh. Danny has been an integral part of the Villa club for a number of years and this season has shown his ability in our Premier and Youth teams and the Waterford Inter-League Youth Squad.
The award was presented at WIT last week in the company of club officials, Danny’s family and members of the O’Byrne family.
Ben Harte, Club President of Villa FC congratulated Danny on the award of the scholarship and expressed his delight that the Scholarship awards will be named after Frank O’Byrne, who dedicated his life to the club and who passed away in May, 2008. Ben said “Frankie always put the players of this club above everything and it is fitting that the first of the club’s tributes to him is a reward for players which will not only help them in their sporting career but also with their education. I am delighted that Danny is the first recipient as he has been an exceptional player for the club over a number of years”
Paul Morrissey, committee member of Villa FC also welcomed the Scholarship Scheme. Paul explained “A feature of Villa FC has always been player welfare and now we have a method of rewarding players who have given years of service on the pitch, while ensuring they receive their third level education at Waterford Institute of Technology”. Paul also pointed out that the scheme would be based on football criteria, educational criteria and contribution to the club through coaching or administration.
The application process for the 2009 Scholarship awards will commence in Spring of 2009.
