preview - queen's one step away from final

06 February 2018

Queen's University are 90 minutes away from reaching the 2018 RUSTLERS Collingwood Cup Final as they go in search for their first success in 32 years, but they face formidable opposition in reigning champions University College Cork at 2.30pm today.

Queen's thought they were in cruise control in yesterday's Quarter Final against Trinity College. Eamon Fyfe completed his hat trick at the beginning of the second half with a superb free-kick from 30 yards to put his side 3-0 up.

However, James Woods rallied Trinity College with an excellent free-kick of his own and diverting a shot to make it 3-2. Daire Rooney immediately made it 4-2 before Trinity were awarded a penalty in the 87th minute with Muhanned Bukhatwa's spot-kick saved before he followed up to set up tense final moments where they had a free kick awarded right on the edge of the box, but Queen's were able to clear.

UCC had a much easier passage into the Semis with a 7-0 victory over Mary Immaculate College. Matthew McKevitt and Cormac Cotter both netted hat tricks as the Cork side were able to take a breather ahead of a tough clash with the hosts today.

In the other Semi Final, it will be a rehearsal for the RUSTLERS CUFL Premier Division Final as DCU take on UCD. Declan Roche's side rushed into an early 4 goal lead in the first twenty minutes on route to a 5-1 victory against Ulster University. While UCD were not as comfortable, they were very impressive in defeating Maynooth University 3-0 with a double from top striker Georgie Kelly and a Daire O'Connor strike.
