new season begins for #smartestleagueintheworld

08 October 2018

The rising RUSTLERS Colleges & Universities Football League returns for another season of action, thrills and spills.

It's been 209 days since IT Carlow rounded off the 2017/18 season by clinching the CUFL Women's Premier Division trophy for the very first time as part of a memorable treble.

Men

The first ball of the 2018/19 season will be kicked in Enniskillen at 12:45pm as newcomers South West College entertain Drogheda Institute of FE in Division Three in what unexpectedly could be one of the most fascinating ties of the week. There will be no doubt that the Fermanagh side will be keen to impress on their first outing but the strength of DIFE will be revealed following the introduction of a football course in the college that is only yards away from United Park, home of SSE Airtricity League club Drogheda United.

Wom

75 minutes later, the defences of both Premier Divisions will commence as Men's and Women's holders, UCD and IT Carlow, begin their campaigns with home ties.

Fresh off their SSE Airtricity League Division One success, UCD host old rivals Trinity College Dublin. While it will be a tough task for Trinity, Richard Maguire will be desparate for his side to avoid the 4-0 defeat they were inflicted upon last November when the two sides met in Clontarf.

Heading towards the South, IT Carlow face a tough ask to repeat their success of the last campaign with several key stars such as Rachel Graham and Roma McLaughlin having moved on. They do have the services of Republic of Ireland U19 international Lauryn O'Callaghan but their credentials will certainly be tested by the visiting UCC.

Blaine Walsh's side held Carlow to a 0-0 draw last December in the Mardyke before being beaten by Ulster University in the League semi-final. The two sides would meet again in Jackman Park in the Kelly Cup Final and it took a header from Chloe Moloney at the very end of extra time to separate them.

Last year, there were 266 games in the Rustlers CUFL amassing 1,273 goals, averaging 4.78 goals per game.

There were over 100 SSE Airtricity League players and 50 Continental Tyres Women's National League players from the 49 Colleges and Universities participating within the competitions as ovr 2,000 players took part nationwide.

From these competitions come some of the future leaders within Irish society as they seek out diplomas, bachelors, masters and PhD's in their respective fields making it the smartest league in the world!
