Games to be held in University of Limerick from Thursday 5th Feb to Sunday 8th February

IUFU 40th Harding Cup 2009

From it's inception by the Irish Universities Football Union in 1969/70 the Harding has grown in status and importance and is now eagerly looked forward to by all soccer playing first year students in their first year in university.

The Harding differs from the Collingwood and Crowley Cups in that participation in the tournament is restricted to freshers who must be in their first year in the Irish Universities system. By definition, a student can only play in one Harding ever!

This is the 40th Anniversary of the Harding Cup and University of Limerick soccer club plan to make the competition a memorable occasion for all the participating Universities.

The Harding Memorial Cup was first presented by the UCD Club in the 1969/70 season, in honour of Albert W. (Bert) Harding, their chairman from 1970 - 1975. In 1975, the Irish Universities Football Union put up a plate for competition to keep up the interest for those teams knocked out of the Cup on day 1.

UCD have dominated the competition winning 14 cups to date. NUIG have 8 wins, UCC have 6, Trinity have 3 and UL 2. Maynooth, QUB, UUJ and Magee have also all won the cup once over the years.

In this years competition UCD and NUIG clash in a massive game in round one on Thursday. The winner will take on UCC on Friday and whichever team comes out on top from these two games will surely be classed as favourite to win the cup this year. However, UL will look to beat DCU in their quarter final on Friday and go on to retain the Cup again this year. Also on Friday Mary Immaculate (playing in the Harding for the first time) will use home advantage to try to overcome the Northern challenge of UUJ. The other quarter final sees Trinity take on Queens.
