munster derby set for collingwood cup final

05 February 2019

A Munster Derby is in-store for the 2019 Rustlers Collingwood Cup Final tomorrow afternoon as the University of Limerick and University College Cork will face off in the Markets Field, Limerick.

With spells of torrential rain throughout the day, conditions were difficult for the University of Limerick and Ulster University as they played on the Ten Acres. The first half proved to be quite tense with neither side daring to show their hand first.

It took until midway through the second half for the first goal to arrive when Ulster University could only clear a corner to the edge of their box where substitute Ed O'Dwyer was lurking and he drove the ball low into the net to give UL the advantage.

Having been renowned for their attacking style of play this season, Ulster University put the pressure onto Limerick in a similar fashion to Maynooth in the Semi-Finals but were undone once again when Alan Murphy played the ball across from the right to Illiah Cocerhan who made it 2-0 to the home side and began the celebrations for UL who are back to try and win their first Collingwood after being denied by a late goal from UCD in the 2016 final.

Facing them will be UCC who put last year's winners, UCD, to the sword in the Maguire's Fields. UCC had two goals ruled out in the first half and were giving the Belfield side numerous problems with a dynamic attacking approach. It was the basic approach that undone the UCD defence as a long ball went straight through to Simon Falvey who lifted the ball over Sheridan and into the net just before half-time for what would turn out to be the only goal.

It was an important second-half for both sides and it appeared UCD would have the impotence when Owen Collins was dismissed for a second bookable offence on the hour mark. With the extra man, UCD dominated possession in the latter stages of the game but were constantly rebuffed by a stern Cork defensive line. The best chance for UCD came from a set-play where captain Gary O'Neill directed Jason McClelland's free kick goalward but David Coffey managed to push the shot over his crossbar.

In the Farquhar Cup, DCU and Queen's University Belfast will contest tomorrow's final in Maguire's Fields after victory today. A late equaliser for DCU against Maynooth forced extra time before two goals right at the end of the second half additional period. Queen's enjoyed a more routine task as they defeated the Royal College of Surgeons by six goals to nil.
