The Colleges and Universities Football League (CUFL) and Women's Soccer Colleges Association of Ireland (WSCAI) were delighted to learn that Team Ireland have had their entries accepted for Men's and Women's Football at the 2019 FISU Summer Universiade, hosted this July in Naples, Italy.

In partnership with Student Sport Ireland, the FAI, CUFL and WSCAI support the football teams that participate at the global collegiate level.

Fifteen members of the 2017 Men's team, coached by Greg Yelverton, are currently playing in the SSE Airtricity League or NIFL Premiership, including Cork City's Sean McLoughlin who captained the side in Chinese Taipei.

With a side dominated by Women's National League players representing Team Ireland in 2017, Amber Barrett, Amanda Budden, Claire O'Riordan and Rianna Jarrett have all been capped at Senior Level for Colin Bell following the tournament.

Both teams will be hoping to improve upon their 13th and 10th placed finishes for Men's and Women's respectively with a top six finish in Naples guaranteeing Team Ireland's participation in the 2021 Universiade which is expected to be held in the Chinese city of Chengdu.

Speaking on the news, FAI National Coordinator for Schools and Third Level Football, Mark Scanlon said, "We are delighted that Team Ireland have been selected to participate in the Universiade. Team Ireland have a strong history of participating in the competition and we are delighted to be able to support Student Sport Ireland in providing Irish students with the opportunity to compete in this international multi-sport tournament."

The Universiade is a multidisciplinary sport event addressed to university students from all over the world. In terms of number of participants, Summer Universiade is just second only to the Olympic Games. The Men's team have participated in the competition on thirteen occasions with their best finishes coming in 2013 and 2015 when they finished 5th in both tournaments. The Women's team have participated in seven of the ten games in which Women's Football has been part of the Universiade with the team coming agonisingly close to winning a medal in 2007 when finishing 4th.

The 2019 Summer Universiade will take place from July 3rd to July 14th. For more information, check out the official tournament website here
