blanch and tallaght to square off in division one final

17 March 2019

Albeit they now share the same name, there will be no love lost when the Blanchardstown and Tallaght campuses of TU Dublin meet on Tuesday afternoon in Athlone Town Stadium to contest the RUSTLERS CUFL Division One title and the glory of promotion to the Premier Division.

Both officially rechristened as part of Ireland's newest University in January, the football teams remain apart when it comes to the CUFL.

Since the restructure of the Premier Division to twelve teams from twenty teams in 2013, both sides have come agonisingly close to regaining their Premier status with Tallaght the last to attempt to do so in the 2016/17 final.

Both sides have already met twice this season with both taking a win a piece in feisty encounters, Tallaght's in the league and Blanchardstown's in the CFAI Colleges Cup First Round.

It was an uncertain start to the season for Tallaght when they were well beaten at home to Letterkenny IT in the opening round. However, they have managed to turn their fortunes around and have gone unbeaten in the league since then, their most impressive display being when they put NUI Galway to the sword in the Semi-Final in Dangan.

For Blanchardstown, their only defeats this season have come at the hands of Tallaght and Waterford IT in the CFAI Colleges Cup Final. The Dublin 15 side are a team filled with goals demonstrated by their 8-0 demolition of GMIT Galway in the semi-final with Rob Manley a key figure with nine goals in all competitions.

Jamie Moore's side will be keen to pick up some silverware after reaching two finals and it would be a bittersweet success to do so against Tallaght. They have been knocking on the door for the past two seasons, on both occasions meeting their downfall at the semi-final stage.

On the other hand, Tallaght will be keen to end their eleven-year hoodoo without league success. In the past number of seasons, consistency has been a problem for Pat Scully's side as they failed to build on reaching the 2017 final last season however they will look to put things right on Tuesday afternoon.
