02 April 2019

University College Cork and TU Dublin Blanchardstown were the inaugural winners of the RUSTLERS FAI Third Level Recreational Festival of Football at the National Sports Campus, Abbotstown.

The tournament is the culmination of recreational football programmes which have been running throughout the year on nineteen various campuses. Each campus programme was led by twenty-eight student activators, current students tasked with coordinating and running the programme on their respective campus.

Each student received a valuable sponsorship co-funded by their Institution's Sports Department and the FAI.

The scheme which was in conjunction with the Student Sport Ireland (SSI) Physical Activity, Health and Well-Being committee saw the appointment of twenty eight activators across nineteen different campuses tasked with coordinating on-campus programmes in an effort to increase the rate of participation in football.

The tournament on Monday afternoon saw eleven men's teams and four women's teams from twelve of the participating Colleges and Universities compete in a 5-a-side competition in Abbotstown.

After a series of matches, after qualifying from their Finals group by defeating Athlone IT, Dublin City University and TU Dublin City Campus, UCC were guaranteed a top three finish when they advanced to the classification rounds.
They sealed top spot with victories over Waterford IT and TU Dublin Blanchardstown in the final rounds.

Having gained plenty of experience of playing 5-a-side throughout the year with their progress in the CUFL Futsal competition, TU Dublin Blanchardstown were victorious in the Women's competition by topping their group and defeating Maynooth University in the final. In their opening game, they were held to a scoreless draw with Maynooth before victories over UCD and Waterford IT out them in pole position before overcoming Maynooth 2-1 in the decider.
