successful beginning for third level recreational programme

06 June 2019

Over 2,500 Third Level Students took part in Recreational Leagues on their campus in the 2018/2019 academic year.

As part of the FAI Third Level Football programme, students on nineteen separate campuses participated in recreational 5-a-sides as part of an initiative in conjunction with the Student Sport Ireland Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing Committee to get more students active in sport.

Each campus programme was run by a Student Activator, a student recruited by their Sports Department to coordinate the activities throughout the year. Each activator received a valuable scholarship co-funded by their Sports Department and the FAI whilst also receiving hands-on administrative experience in managing a football-specific programme.

To mark the completion of the first year of the programme, each campus was invited to send a team to participate in a Festival of Football tournament in the National Sports Campus, Abbottstown where they played off against their fellow students in a series of matches.

Speaking on the completion of the first year of the programme, FAI National Coordinator for Schools and Third Level Football, Mark Scanlon said, "The inaugural year of the Third Level Recreational Programme has been widely successful and a promising addition to activities that students can avail of on their campus. Entering Third Level can often be a difficult time for students to adjust to life on campus, this programme helps them to engage with their fellow classmates and also stay active. We hope that the ground-breaking work performed this year by the Student Activators and Sports Departments will encourage even more students and campuses to participate going forward."
