university of ulster jordanstown win harding cup

13 February 2009

University of Ulster Jordanstown are the 2009 Harding Cup Champions, beating University of Limerick 2-1 after extra time.

The 40th Harding Cup was hosted by the University of Limerick from Thursday 5th February to Sunday 8th February 2009 in excellent weather despite the icey conditions and snowfalls throughout much of the rest of the country.

In the only first round game on Thursday 5th February, NUIG knocked out tournament favourites UCD in a very tight encounter.

On Friday in the quarter-finals NUIG again played a very evenly contested game eventually overcoming UCC 5-4 on penalties AET.

In the other quarter-finals UUJ defeated a stubborn Mary Immaculate team 2-0 AET, while UL, the hosts, beat DCU comfortably 2-0 and Trinity easily saw of the challenge of QUB 7-0.

In the semi-finals on Saturay, UUJ proved how strong they were beating Trinity 4-0 while the host UL overcame NUIG 3-1 AET in a thrilling contest.

The final, played on the UL Bowl, saw UUJ edge out UL 2-1 AET in a very exciting game. This was only the second time that UUJ had captured the Harding Cup, their last victory being 19 years ago in 1990.

QUB and DCU qualified for the Harding Plate final and DCU saw off the Northern Challenge with a comfortable 4-1 victory.

Much credit must be attributed to all the first year players for the spirit in which the competition was played and also to the organisers, referees and groundstaff at the University of Limerick for their efforts in ensuring a well organised competition on excellent pitches.
