Intervarsity Qualifer Round up
This years Intervarsity qualifers took place in NUI Maynooth on Saturday the 6th February. Eight teams competed to obtain one of the remaining 4 places for this years WSCAI Intervarsities which will take place from the 4th - 6th of March.
In a tightly contested competition WIT, DCU, NUIG and Queens University Belfast emerged to qualify for this years Intervarsities..
In the first game of Group 1 Trinity fought back to hold DCU to a 1:1 draw after Zoe Doherty had put DCU ahead in the first half.
In the next round DCU hit the ground running against NUIG, who were 2 goals down at half time. An excellent free kick just outside the box from Kelly Fisher brought NUIG to within a goal in the second half but they failed to gain the upper hand against a resilient DCU side.
Trinity had a comprehensive 3:0 win over RCSI in the other game of the group.RCSI recovered well from this initial loss and held both NUIG and DCU to scoreless draws in their remaining fixtures.
This resulted in a very close end to the group both NUIG and Trinity were equal on points and goal difference so the decision came down to the result between the two teams in their group stages. As NUIG emerged 2:1 winners on the day they took the second qualifying spot in Group 1.
In group two WIT took the first qualifying spot, winning all three groups games in the process.
The fight for the remaining spot went down to the line. CIT, Mary I and Queens ended up equal on points. CIT were eliminated due to their negative goal difference. As a result of their equal points, goal difference and the fact that their group game ended in a 0:0 draw Queens and Mary I had to face each other in a penalty shoot out to decide who went though to this years intervarsities.
The teams were level at 4:4 as the shoot out went in to sudden death. Queens emerged winners as Mary I missed their sudden death penalty and Queens coolly converted theirs.
