IT Carlow were beaten 7-4 against University of Nis - Serbia their final group game today in the European University Futsal Championship in Zagreb and now go in the 8-16 place play offs on Friday. The Irish boy
s improved dramatically from yesterdays defeat to reigning champions Malaga, showing a tactical awareness and putting in their best overall performance of the week.
Serbia got ahead after just one minute when Carlow lost possession too easy, however despite that setback they quickly got into the game and had chances when Craig Wall hit the post, Ben Ryan forced a great save from Mitrovic and Ryan was just wide. A well worked free kick on 18 mins put the Serbians 2-0 up, but Carlow responded immediately with a great long range goal from Ryan. Good play by Bobby Tier and Ryan forced another great save from Mitrovic and from a great corner kick move narrowly missed the target. Serbia went 3-1 from a corner and at half time led 4-1 following a counter attack when Carlow were denied a certain penalty.
The second half say Serbia get three well worked goals but the highlight was three Irish goals the first a long range effort from Patrick Carey, a superb goal following a Tier pass to Ryan and a neat turn a strike from Ryan to complete has hat-trick.
Head Coach Paul O'Reilly said afterwards "the lads worked so hard today, each time we made a switch the player coming off was after working flat out for a few minutes, any time we conceded today was when there was a lapse on concentration. The players have taken on board what needs to be done and I believe this experience will only make them better".
