eusa futsal ucc 0-5 kocaeli university - turkey

23 July 2010

UCC were beaten today 5-0 in the Womens European Universities Futsal Championships in Zagreb by a technically superior and outstanding counter attacking Kocaeli University from Turkey.

This game was their final group game and now move into the play off games on Saturday and Sunday.
UCC started brighter and had good chances when Michelle Hourihan and Eimear Knightley were just off target. However they were undone by a good counter attacking move that saw Ersecal finish to the net after seven minutes. UCC dominated the rest of the half with chances for Aisling Brennan and Knightley but just before the half Ersecal again finished neatly after another counter attack. The Turks went 3-0 up with a goal on the half time whistle with a long range strike from Ozbay.
UCC continued to press throughout the second half and had chances from Linda Douglas, Knightley, Cahill and Brennan all saved by the excellent Caglar. Megan Morris saved UCC three times late in the game.
Head Coach Greg Yelverton said after the game "Today I felt Turkey had too much experience for us as they used the counter attack superbly. You could tell that we are new to the game of futsal and look very tired. While the girls worked hard we showed our inexperience with some naive passing and passages of play. Our aim now is to finish 5th which would be an unbelievable achievement for us as we are beginners in this game of futsal"
UCC: Megan Morris, Gillian Cahill, Caitriona Nagle, Michelle Hourihan, Patrica Hickey, Linda Douglas (Capt), Aisling Brennan, Eimear Knightley, Alison Roche, Eimear Feerick. Head Coach Greg Yelverton, Assistant Coach Tomas Earls.
