UCC were devastatingly beaten today in the 5th/8th place playoff game in Zagreb when two late goals saw them lose 3-2 after being 2-0 up.
University of Zagreb, who won two group games already this week started brighter and had a number chances as UCC struggled to settle. Goalkeeper Megan Morris made three great saves before Eimear Knightly went on a great run that saw captain Linda Douglas narrowly miss. As the half wore on UCC got into the game and had chances from Douglas and Alison Roche before Knightly hit the post. UCC had outstanding defending from Michelle Hourihan and Gill Cahill throughout the game, and limited the number of strikes on the UCC goal.
The second half started with a near miss from a well worked free kick between Douglas and Knightly. Patricia Hickey had two chances to put UCC in front but both were well saved. UCC went in front six mins into the second half with another well worked free kick and Douglas fired to the Zagreb net. Three mins later UCC were two up when great play by Hickey ended up with Knightly scoring from close range. With eight mins left Zagreb got a goal back with a great strike from Nemcic Tihana. Morris made three more outstanding saves and with three mins left Zeman Ivana made it 2-2 following a counter attacking move. With thirty seconds on the clock Nemcic won it for Zagreb with a great close range finish.
Head coach Greg Yelverton said after the game "the girls gave everything today and fell short, they are bitterly disappointed as we were so close to winning the game. I can only put it down to lack of experience in the game of futsal as to why we lost, but thats life we have another game tomorrow and Tommy and I will have to pick the girls up and hopefully get a win".
UCC will finish the week with a 7th/8th place play off game at 12.40 on Sunday.
