Drogheda Institute of Further Education marched into the CUFL Division 2 Final with a dramatic 7-6 penalty shootout victory over IT Tralee B.
In an enthralling game DIFE were 2-0 at half time and three two down deep in injury time at the end of extra time, and managed to miss their first penalty in the shootout. However their never say die attitude meant that Martin Spain’s troops qualified for their first ever CUFL Final.
Tralee took the lead with an outstanding volley by Gavin Doherty form a Stephen O’Reilly corner after 19 mins. It was all Tralee in the first half and a Doherty free kick was brilliantly saved half way through first half. In first half stoppage time it was 2-0 to Tralee when Kevin Harnett scored after a mix up in the Drogheda defence.
Drogheda pulled a goal back quickly into the second half from Donal Callan the first a penalty. The game finished 2-2 after both sides had great chances to win the game. Tralee looked to have won the game when Michael Carrolls expert free kick hit the post an Harnett followed up to score to make it 3-2. All was not lost however when deep into stoppage time at the end of extra time Robert Ruddy got on the end of a free kick to bring his side level and into penalty kicks.
