UCD Reclaim Collingwood Cup

23 February 2012

Niall Hanley's 12th minute goal was enough for UCD to beat surprise packets Mary Immaculate College in today's Irish Universities Collingwood Cup title Final at the University of Limerick.

UCD dominated throughout and it was Barry McDonald's corner that Hanley headed powerfully to the net. Mary I had goalkeeper Bobby Carroll to thank after Ross King's effort was brilliantly pushed onto the post just before half time. UCD v MIUCD 'keeper Mark McGinley was only tested once in the opening half when a Peter Lane free kick from distance hit the side netting. UCD's first effort of note in the second half came from Sean Buckley with a fierce drive that Carroll managed to block. Then Cillian Morrison, UCD almost scored the goal of the tournament with an overhead kick brilliantly which was saved by the brave Carroll.

Both sides showed the affects of playing four successive days of stamina sapping cup football but Mary I, who were making their first ever appearance in a Collingwood Cup Final, can take plenty of pride from their performances during the week knocking out the hosts University of Limerick and the holders UCC.

UCD's Mark Langtry was named Player of the Tournament.

IUFU Farquhar Cup Final

Earlier in the day NUI Maynooth won another IUFU Trophy beating hosts University of Limerick 3-2 after extra time in the Farquhar Cup Final. Goals from Niall Lanigan, Mark Forker and  Niall Conlon were enough for Maynooth Gavin Roche and Martin Deedy (pen) replying for UL.
