An early defensive lapse proved costly as the Ireland selection preparing for the World University Games in Russia during July next went down by a single goal to the Welsh Universities in a friendly fixture at Peamount United FC.
The decisive score came on 15 minutes after centre back Ryan Matthews delayed too long in getting in his clearance and allowed Aaron Hopkins to gain possession. The Welsh winger then went on to set up Chris Davies who easily beat Michael Slingermann for the only goal of a scrappy game.
Ireland created very few chances with Josh O'Shea and Carl Forsyth having the best of them. O'Shea crashed a shot off the crossbar after good work by Samir Belhout while later Forsyth was unlucky to see his effort saved by goalkeeper Will Fuller.
