TEAM Ireland Women's Squad beat Canada 1-0 in their second game at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
Ireland got off to a great start with a couple of early chances and took the lead after seven mins.
Seana Cooke won the ball in midfield and passed to Dora Gorman who dribbled past two players before slotting a through ball in to the box for captain Sara Lawlor to score with a neat left foot finish to the bottom far corner of the net.
Ireland dominated the game for the next 20 mins and should have doubled their lead. Lawlor again latched onto a through ball down the right wing and her perfect cut-back found Julie Ann Russell on the edge of the box, but her shot flew inches wide.
Soon after that Cooke beat five players on a mazy run into the box, but as she delayed getting her shot away it was eventually blocked by a defender. Canada came more into the game as the half went on but goalkeeper Eve Badana was very safe in the Ireland goal and dealt with any chances the Canadians threw at her.
An injury to Ciara Grant just before half time disrupted Ireland's play and forced them into an early change, with Emma Hansberry replacing her.
Ireland started the second half strongly and created a number of chances but failed to test the goalkeeper. Russell then hit the post after a mazy run and Lawlor just failed to connect with the rebound.
While Canada had a lot of possession in the second half as Irish legs started to tire, they were limited to long range shots due to a superb Irish back line, with both Zoe Murphy and Karen Duggan excellent at the heart of the defence, but supported well by full backs Sophie Perry and Seana Cooke.
Ireland Manager Sue Ronan was delighted with the win saying: 'We started off today's game at a very high pace with the intention of putting Canada under early pressure after they had been defeated in their first game and we got our reward with an early goal.
"For the next 20 mins we were well on top and really should have killed Canada off. But despite some great play we couldn't find that killer 2nd goal and the longer the game went on and the more tired we got, there was always the danger of the Canadians sneaking an equaliser.
"But we stuck at it and dug deep and I have to give all 15 players that were used today great credit for that. We now have one foot in the quarter-finals and if we find out later that we're definitely there, I will be looking to rest some of our key players against Mexico on Tuesday."
