irish men win world university games play-off match

14 July 2013

Ireland beat Malaysia 5-4 on penalties today in the 5th-8th Place Play Off after the game finished 1-1 at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

Danny Crowley made nine changes to the team that started the quarter final on Friday against France as the players were feeling the effects of four games in eight days.

Ireland started the game well and controlled possession without threatening the Malaysian goal in the first half. The second half was more open with chances at both ends throughout the half.

The Irish took the lead on 63 minutes when their best passing move ended with a foul in the area on Ray Foy and Correy Davidson expertly finished the resultant penalty to the bottom corner.

On 69 minutes the game was level, Devandrn took the ball inside and curled home a superb goal from 22 yards that flew past Corbett.

The game finished and Ireland faced their second penalty shoot out in three days, but this time came out on the right side.

At 4-3 down Corbett made a great save to keep his side in the shoot out and on the next penalty made another fantastic save to win the game for Ireland and set up a 5th/6th Place Play Off against either Ukraine or Canada on Tuesday at 11am Irish time. Ireland will be looking to surpass their previous best finish if 6th in Italy in 1997.

Manager Danny Crowley was delighted with the win saying: "the lads put in another great performance today. We made a few changes and I guess it showed the strength in depth of the squad that the lads that came in did so well.

"Some of them have had to be patient, like Niall and Tristen but they both proved more than capable today. I'm delighted with the whole squad again as they have showed great character to pick themselves up after Friday's loss. We will look forward to our last game now on Tuesday knowing that we have equaled Ireland's best ever finish."
