The WSCAI Intervarsity Qualifiers took place today (Friday) in three venues accros the country.
First up was the meeting of Cork IT and Mary Immaculate College in Cork with the hosts getting off to a great start when Elaine Field scored after a pinpoint cross from Emma Farmer. Mary I had a few chances but couldn't get an equaliser and the home side went into the break with a slender lead.
Within five minutes of the restart it was 2-0 to CIT, Amanda Budden pouncing on a mix up in the Mary I defence and Michelle Brown scored a third goal for CIT when firing into the top corner after a good cut back.
In Waterford, hosts WIT played 2012 winners IT Carlow. Carlow started brightly, going ahead after eight minutes when Jenny Ferarri scored. Just on half time Becky Conroy got an equaliser after a nice pass from Rachel Hutchinson. The hosts won the game with a goal in the 68th minute from Theresa Redmond.
There was no shortage of goals in the IVQ between Trinity college and NUI Galway which was held in College Park today. Galway started off strong and dominated possession, putting the Trinity defence under a lot of pressure. They didn't take long to open the scoring, Rachel Keyes was fouled inside the box on 10 minutes and Jennifer Byrne converted the penalty. Galway continued to pile on the pressure and looked very dangerous going forward. They went two up in the 18th minute when Rachel Keyes produced a fantastic piece of skill to flick the ball over the defender and then chip the ball over the keeper.
Trinity had a chance to pull one back in the 20th minute when Hannigan played a great ball through the NUI Galway defence but unfortunately Lieto couldn't get on the end of it. Trinity created some really good chances but could not find the net as keeper Sorcha Coleman making some good saves. NUI Galway then extended their lead with a great finish from McGrory who showed great composure to put the ball past Fisher to make it 3-0.
The second half started similar to the first, with NUI Galway creating some great opportunities but Fisher was on form to keep the score down. Galway were then rewarded for their good play with another penalty, Byrne stepped up to the mark and made no mistake as she put the ball past Fisher to make it 4-0. However Trinity didn't give up and continued to battle hard and were rewarded with a goal on 75 minutes. Fisher produced an outstanding save and after they cleared the resultant corner scored on the counter attack, Kennedy with a cool finish putting the ball by Coleman making it 4-1.In the dying minutes of the game Byrne completed her hat trick when, from a corner, she out jumped her defender to head the ball into the Trinity net to end the game 5-1.
DCU progressed to the play offs when St Pats Drumcondra were unable to field a team.
The four winners from today progress to the Intervarsities Play Offs in January to determine which competition they will play at the Intervarsities, hosted by UCD, in March 2014. They will play one of the qualifiers from last year, NUI Maynooth, Athlone IT, University of Ulster Jordanstown or IT Tralee. The eight teams will go into the draw next week.
