Report from IT Carlow B vs Sallynoggin

Colleges and Universities
Division One Quarter Final
This Quarter Final saw last years two finalists face off for a place in the last 4 of the competition. Sallynoggin would want to make up for last years defeat to Carlow and they proved that as they flew out of the blocks and were the much brighter side in the opening exchanges. In fact, they had 3 great chances all within the first 15 minutes of play. Some sloppy play at the back gave Sean Lynch a great chance to open the scoring but he pushed his first effort wide. Carlow were trying to play possession football but Sallnoggin's work rate forced the holders into making mistakes and Lynch again nearly capitalised on Carlow getting caught in possession on the edge of the box, but again his finishing let him down.
Sallynoggin did finally make the breakthrough their work rate deserved and Lynch made up for his early misses with a good finish from a low cross from the right hand side.
However, their lead only lasted 10 minutes, and in the 30th minute after some good Carlow play Conor Keddy finished the move with a cushioned header past Sallynoggin net minder Gavin Tresson to make it 1-1.
For the rest of the half it was all Carlow as they got their momentum and forced 2 good saves out of Tresson in the Sallynoggin goal.
Sallynoggin would have liked to make it to half time level and re-group but it wasn't to be as just on the stroke of half time Carlow Midfielder Neil Heffernan made it 2-1 with a strong run and confident finish.
After the break Carlow started as they finished the first half but Sallynoggin held firm and through a combination of back four and goalkeeper they kept Carlow at bay. They relied on some good defending and quick counter attacks.
The goal of the game then came on 60 minutes when again, after some quick fluid football from Carlow Conor Keddy found an opening on the right side and crossed for Aaron Rafter to guide his first time volley deftly over the onrushing Sallynoggin keeper into the corner of the net to make it 3-1.
Not long after this Carlow got their fourth when Michael Mullen found himself in the box and the big left full made no mistake with a powerful header. 4-1.
Sallynoggin however did not give up and 5 minutes from the end got their rewards when Conor Cregan got their second goal with a header from a corner. Sallynoggin did have another great chance to make it a nervy finish for Carlow before the final whistle but could not convert. In the end it was a strong IT Carlow B that came out on top in an entertaining game and booked their place in the Division 1 Semi Final.
