Michael Leigh hit all four goals in a 4-2 victory against Trinity College Dublin to get the hosts University of Limerick off to a flying start as the Irish Universities Harding Cup tournament kicked off on UL's top class All Weather pitches in Cappavilla.
Leigh opened his account with just one minute on the clock and although Trinity managed an equaliser from Sean Barrett 15 minutes later, Leigh struck again to give the home side a 2-1 interval lead.
The UL striker headed a third early in the second half and followed up with his fourth shortly after before Matt Collins netted a second for the Dubliners direct from a corner.
NUI Maynooth were impressive 3-0 winners over DCU in the quarter final tie. Cillian Gallager netted two and Mark Brennan added a third with a long range effort.
Goals from Evan Boyce, David Edwards and Eoin Walsh sent NUI Galway throught to a semi final meeting with Maynooth after their comfortable 3-0 win over aq disappointing UCC.
While holders UCD proved too strong in a 7-1 win over newcomers Mary Immaculate College.
Two goals apiece from Conor Cannon and Dean Clarke with further goals from Timmy Molloy, Adam Carroll and Anis Ibrahim completing the scoring. Rory Finnegan netted the lone goal for the local side.
