Senior international Ciara Grant flew in from Spain where she had seen action for the Republic of Ireland in a friendly international earlier this week and helped inspire UCD to a 2-0 semi final victory over Maynooth University in the Womens Inter Varsity Cup tournament at Waterford IT Sports Campus.
UCD will now bid to capture the cup for the first time since 1997 when they take on UCC in to-day's decider after the Leesiders had a narrow 2-1 win over the holders IT Sligo in the other semi final.
Maynooth without the injured Sara Lawlor proved to be dogged opponents for the Belfield side and after a scoreless opening half where goalkeeper Carol Hanna had saved well from Orlagh Nolan and Grant they failed to create any worthwhile chances after the break for top scorer Amber Barrett.
UCD made their domination finally pay off and they went ahead on the hour mark when Sophie Pratt beat Hanna after the Maynooth 'keeper had made a fine double save from full back Jetta Berrill.
Grant continued to torment Maynooth and she sealed the UCD win in the closing minutes with a superb finish from Nolan's precise right wing cross.
A Laura Lynch header and a smart Roisin O'Connor finish from an Ellie Stritch cross saw UCC storm into a two goal second half lead after a tight scoreless first period against IT Sligo.
Geraldine McLaughlin pulled a goal back for the holders but despite a storming finish Sligo failed to take the tie into extra time.
The hosts Waterford IT will face University of Limerick in the Inter Varsity Plate Final after they got the better of NUI Galway in a thrilling nine goal semi final.
A Ciara Rossiter hat trick and two further goals from Besarta Ajeti and Rachael Hutchinson edged them past Galway who also saw Jenny Byrne hit a hat trick with Tessa Mullins grabbing the other goal.
Keara Cormican scored the vital goal before the break which proved enough to see UL past Ulster University in the second semi final despite the best efforts of the impressive Amber Dempster to keep the Ulster side in the tie.
Athlone IT needed extra time to get through to the Inter Varsity Shield Final when they came from behind to defeat DCU 3-2 with vital two goals from Shaunagh Jackson after a Yasmin Rodgers early opener.
DCU had hit back and Sarah Rowe and Joanna Byrne scored to give them an interval lead.
But Maz Sweeney's side shaded the tie with Jackson's winner coming in the first minute of extra time and they will play Cork IT in the final.
