UCD 1 UCC 0 Jetta Birrell gave UCD their first Womens Inter Varsity Cup success since 1997 with a goal midway into the second half to edge out UCC 1-0 in the final at the Waterford IT Sports Campus.
However some very solid UCC defending had dealt with the danger on several occasions until a stroke of bad luck lead to UCD grabbing the vital goal at the half point of the second period.
Full back Birrell had always looked threatening throughout the tight decider with some strong runs down the right flank and when UCC 'keeper Clodagh Walsh attempted to cut out a cross come shot from Birrell she deflected the ball into the net for the vital score.
A disappointing blow for the Cork side who up until that point had managed to keep the UCD attackers at bay with sterling work from central defenders Ciara O'Connell and Carys Johnson.
UCC did manage to produce a storming finish and might have taken the game into extra time but unfortunately Laura Murphy put a free from the edge of the UCD box well over Temple's crossbar with the majority of her UCC teammates packing the UCD area and expecting a cross.
The timely success for UCD also provided long time mentor Joe Carrick with the best possible birthday present and the Belfield players and management certainly celebrated the memorable double occasion in style.
UCD had reached several cup finals in the intervening years since their last success and Carrick had been there with the players to suffer the heartbreak after many of those disappointing defeats.
While current head coach Declan Bollard was also delighted after he had experienced defeat in three previous cup finals.
